What Do Security Guards in Ontario Do?

In Ontario, security guards are unarmed or armed depending on certain criteria such as; agency licensing, guard qualifications and licensing and meeting Provincial guidelines to meet those requirements and client needs. They use their skills and training to mitigate risk, detect problems, and eliminate disruptions, using physical force only when absolutely necessary. Their duties could include:

  • Patrol industrial, commercial or residential premises to prevent and detect signs of intrusion and ensure security of doors, windows, and gates.
  • Monitor and authorize entrance and departure of employees, visitors, and other persons to guard against theft and maintain security of premises.
  • Respond to alarms and investigate disturbances and respond appropriately.
  • Write regular reports of daily activities and irregularities, such as equipment or property damage, theft, presence of unauthorized persons, or unexpected occurrences.
  • Showing presence among visitors, customers, or employees to preserve order and protect property.
  • Warn persons of rule infractions or violations, and apprehend or evict violators from premises.
  • Respond in the case of medical, fire or other emergencies and administer first aid if appropriate.
  • Answer telephone calls to take messages, answer questions, and provide information during non-business hours.
  • Operate detecting devices to screen individuals and prevent passage of prohibited articles into restricted areas.
  • Escort or drive motor vehicle to transport individuals to specified locations or to provide personal protection.
  • Inspect and adjust security systems, equipment, or machinery to ensure operational use and to detect evidence of tampering.
  • Monitor and adjust controls that regulate building systems, such as air conditioning unit, furnace, or other equipment.

 
Since security guards have the important and comprehensive role of protecting people and property, their duties may extend further beyond those listed to the basic outline listed above.
